The Power of Laughter
Why You Should Laugh Even When You Fail

FOR THE LOVE OF HOMESCHOOLING
Have you ever thought about laughing when you fail? It sounds ridiculous, right? But let me tell you a story that might just change your mind.
The other day, I was talking to my daughter, who’s currently in Costa Rica on a mission trip. She told me about a moment in class when she was struggling to understand something. She started feeling discouraged and frustrated — as we all do when things aren’t clicking.
That’s when one of her classmates said something surprising:
“When you fail, just laugh.”
At first, it sounded crazy. Why would you laugh at failure? But for some reason, Jeanelle decided to try it. And to her surprise, it worked. When she laughed, she relaxed — and once she relaxed, she started learning more easily.
Laughter Is Like Medicine
This story immediately reminded me of Proverbs 17:22:
“A cheerful heart is good medicine.”
We spend so much time trying to fix our problems with effort and stress. But what if the solution is simpler than we think? What if laughter is the medicine we’ve been overlooking?
After hearing Jeanelle’s story, I started looking into the actual benefits of laughter — and let me tell you, it’s powerful. According to HelpGuide.org, here’s what laughter can do for you:
• Relaxes your muscles – Laughter can relax your body for up to 45 minutes after you stop laughing.
• Boosts your immune system – Laughter increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, making you more resistant to disease.
• Triggers endorphins – Laughter releases feel-good chemicals in your brain, reducing pain and improving your mood.
• Protects your heart – Laughter improves blood flow and can help protect against heart attacks.
• Burns calories – Believe it or not, laughing for 10-15 minutes can burn 40 calories — not a huge workout, but every little bit helps!
• Eases anger and stress – Laughter can lighten your mood and make it easier to handle difficult situations.
• Helps you live longer – Studies show that people with a strong sense of humor tend to live longer, even when facing health challenges.
Laughter and Learning Go Hand in Hand
But here’s the biggest takeaway from my daughter’s story: Laughter made learning easier.
When we’re stressed, our brain goes into “fight or flight” mode, which makes it harder to focus and retain information. But when you laugh, your body relaxes. Your brain opens up, and you’re more receptive to learning.
Jeanelle’s classmate wasn’t just giving her a quick fix — they were showing her how to create the right state for learning. When Jeanelle laughed, she stopped putting so much pressure on herself. And once she relaxed, the material started to click.
Laugh Even When You Fail
Here’s the lesson: Failure is part of the process. You’re going to face challenges — in homeschooling, in parenting, and in life. But instead of getting stuck in stress and discouragement, try laughing at it.
• Mess up a math problem? Laugh and try again.
• Forget an important appointment? Laugh, make a note, and move on.
• Feeling overwhelmed? Find something funny, take a breath, and reset.
Laughter changes your perspective. It helps you see that failure isn’t permanent — it’s just part of the learning process.
Make Laughter a Habit
So here’s my encouragement to you this week:
1. Find something to laugh about every day — even if it’s small.
2. Laugh when you mess up — and teach your kids to do the same.
3. Relax and enjoy the process — learning happens best when you’re at ease.
Life is hard enough — don’t take it so seriously. Start laughing more, and you just might find that learning (and life) gets a whole lot easier.
Now It’s Your Turn:
1. Make Laughter a Habit: Find a way to add laughter to your homeschool day this week.
2. Share the Joy: If this encouraged you, subscribe to Homeschool Aficionado and share this article with another homeschooling family.
3. Relax and Enjoy: Let go of the stress — and start laughing more. You might be surprised at how much better things get!
